Scholarship Opportunities
In honor of the remarkable legacy of MSgt (ret) Dr. James “Jim” Cunningham, DEFENSEWERX is proud to establish a scholarship that pays tribute to his unwavering commitment to kindness and selflessness. Jim’s influence reached far and wide, leaving an indelible mark on those he encountered. His simple mantra, “Be a good human and be kind” was especially noted by his colleagues at DEFENSEWERX, where he worked tirelessly to shape the organization and support its mission.
Jim served in the United States Air Force for two decades, displaying dedication in humanitarian and wartime missions. With a PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology, his intellectual contributions were equally commendable. Beyond his professional achievements, Jim’s devotion to his family, including his wife, Linda, of over 29 years and children, Jasper (Jacy) and Cassidy, showcased the depth of his character and zeal for life. This scholarship stands as a testament to Jim’s enduring spirit, ensuring that his principles of goodness and compassion continue to inspire future generations.
THE AWARD
The MSgt (ret) Dr. Jim Cunningham Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a local student in the Okaloosa, Florida School District who has exhibited selfless acts for those in need through volunteering, leadership roles, extracurricular, and/or other related activities. This merit-based scholarship consists of a one-time $5,000 to an accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice. The award will be presented to the recipient by DEFENSEWERX at a later event. The date, time, and place of the event will be provided to the recipient
ELIGIBILITY
The recipient of this award must be:
- Resident in Okaloosa County
- High school senior or a non-traditional student enrolled as a senior in 2025
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Two (2) letters of recommendation (teachers, coaches, counselors, mentors, work/volunteer supervisors, or other non-family members)
- A written essay (750 words max) explaining what selfless acts you have personally taken and how you plan to better our Nation and/or your community with your further education
- Unofficial high school transcript

Major General Robert “ChedBob” Chedister was a great man, a dedicated patriot, and an extremely loved father and grandfather. Throughout his life, ChedBob impacted countless individuals and touched the lives of those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. ChedBob served as the first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for DEFENSEWERX, shaping the organization into what it is today. Through a stroke of fortune, he handed the CTO baton to one of his sons, Brad.
ChedBob proudly served 33 years in the United States Air Force (USAF), rising to the rank of Major General. ChedBob was a Command Pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours on numerous USAF aircraft, including the F-117 Stealth Fighter. During his final assignment at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, he was the Installation and Air Armament Center Commander, serving as the Air Force’s Program Executive Officer for Weapons. ChedBob retired in Northwest Florida and dedicated a great deal of his time to bettering the beautiful Emerald Coast area. He had a passion for providing educational and career opportunities for others and proudly served on the Emerald Coast Military Affairs Council and the Northwest Florida State College’s Board of Trustees. ChedBob is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, his sons, and grandchildren.
